Tina and her boyfriend, both juniors in high school, had been together for almost a year. Tina loved Wade and hoped they would marry some day. Wade told Tina he wanted to "prove" his intention to marry her by having sex.  Tina thought getting pregnant was the worst thing that could happen to her. She knew a couple of girls at school who had gotten pregnant, and they were miserable now. It was their own fault, she knew. They had been "doing it" since junior high school. No wonder they got pregnant. 

After the winter formal, Wade took Tina to a secluded cabin in the woods he had borrowed for the night. Once inside, Wade built a fire in the stone fire place and lit a few candles. Then he surprised Tina with an expensive ring, an "engaged to be engaged "ring, he told her. Tina was overjoyed and filled with love to the point of tears.

Why Do Wicked People Prosper?

If God blesses those who obey Him, why do we see wicked people prosper and good people suffer under poverty and oppression?

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but those whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on this law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:1-3

The Bible says people who delight in God’s law prosper. So, why does our experience not always match this picture? Its all about perspective. When you look too closely at a painting it can become a confusing mixture of colors that make no sense. In the same way, taking one verse out of context of the whole message of God’s Word can cloud our understanding. So lets take a step back and get a better perspective.

As I scrolled through my news feed a few days ago, a story caught my attention. “Man Declared Dead, Comes Back to Life After 45 Minutes,” the headline read.

I clicked through to read the details. The man’s wife had been woken up by his irregular breathing. Without any warning, he’d gone into full cardiac arrest and was rushed to the emergency room.  The doctors had done all they could to revive him, but he was later pronounced dead.
As family was called to say a final goodbye, his son declared that his dad would not die that day. Minutes later, the father’s heart began to beat irregularly and ultimately the man made a complete recovery.
Doctors were stunned. They declared it a miracle. The father later said prayers on his behalf and God’s work had saved him.

The Curse of Competition

Today I was thinking about competitiveness among those of us who serve in ministry.  I do feel like there is some good news on this front.  It seems that the walls of competition and comparison are beginning to slowly come down.  I regularly talk to pastors who authentically want to be a blessing to other churches in their community.  I hear more and more stories about ministries and churches linking arms to work together, pray together, and be together.

But there is no doubt that a spirit of competition and comparison is still a demon that many of us wrestle with in ministry.  It can be subtle and devious… but it is real.   It is rarely overt, but lingers in our hearts and thoughts can be ugly and dark.  And, whether the spirit of competition is with another church or another staff member within the same church, it is always destructive.  It hurts us and those around us.
