Plane fire closes Heathrow airport runways

A fire on an Ethiopian Airlines jet on the tarmac at Heathrow Airport has forced Britain's busiest airport to close both of its runways as emergency services tackle the blaze.
No one is believed to have been on board the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a type of long-range, mid-size airliner, which has been at the centre of troubles in the recent past following a series of battery fires. The plane was on the stand and there were no reports of injuries.
Earlier this year, battery smoke coming from two Dreamliner planes operated by Japanese carriers led to a grounding of the world's 787 fleet and a halt to all deliveries of the planes to airlines.
The BBC reported that the plane on fire at Heathrow was the first 787 Dreamliner to resume flights after the grounding.
The incident caused all landings and take-offs to be suspended at around 5pm on Friday as the busy summer holiday get-away period builds up.
The battery problems followed endless production difficulties for the Dreamliner, which has been marketed as a quiet, fuel-efficient aircraft, carrying between 201 and 290 passengers on medium-range routes.
It should have entered passenger service in 2008 but it was not until October 2011 that the first commercial flight was operated by the Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways.
Thomson Airways became the first British carrier to operate the ultra-green Dreamliner earlier this month. British Airways is due to take delivery of the first two of its 24 Dreamliners, while Virgin Atlantic is set to get the first of its 16 Dreamliners in September next year.

Paris train crash kills six people and injures hundreds

At least six people have died and over a hundred were injured when a packed French intercity train derailed and crashed at high speed into a station outside Paris.

The French railway company SNCF said the train travelling from Paris to Limoges was carrying 385 passengers when it derailed at 5.15pm on Friday at Brétigny-sur-Orge in Essonne, 20km south of Paris.

Four of the train's seven carriages ploughed into a crowded platform at rush hour on one of the busiest days of the year for holiday getaways.

Security services have been working on the wreckage where passengers are believed to be trapped in mangled carriages, which were lying on their side.

The French president François Hollande, visiting the scene, said six people were killed and 22 were seriously injured, including one who was in a critical condition. The prefect's office in Essonne said a total of 180 people were injured. Hollande said three inquiries had been launched into what caused the derailment.

Michael Lesaunier, the owner of a cafe beside the busy suburban station told iTele: "The train approached very, very fast, knocking out everything in its path. It was rush hour, the platform was full."

He added that the passengers he had seen were very shocked and talking of serious injuries.

Boris Berson, a passenger travelling in one of the carriages that did not derail, said the passengers in his unaffected carriage were shaken and "did not know what was going on".

El Mehdi Bazgua, 19, who saw the derailment from the window of a different RERC local suburban train, told Le Parisien website: "I heard a massive noise and saw a cloud of sand that covered everything. I saw stones and wires on the ground. Then the dust lifted … We saw the first injured. I saw a man with an open head wound. Lots of people were cut. Lots of train passengers were blocked under the train."

He had heard of very bad injuries and said a lot of passengers on his train were crying. One of the wounded passengers asked observers not to film the accident.

Several witnesses described the train as appearing to "split in two". One witness told Europe 1 radio of a scene of chaos and panic at the station where he said the derailed carriages were "crushed".

The Socialist mayor of Brétigny, Bernard Decaux, told Le Parisien: "Three carriages were tangled up one behind the other", with a fourth lying on its side. He added: "I have no idea of the number of casualties, I've just been told it risks being very heavy. There are people injured by ballast."

He said "Everyone was running in all directions. It was panic. It was an apocalyptic sight."

At the scene, Guillaume Pepy, head of SNCF, in tears in front of the TV cameras, talked of a "rail catastrophe".

Hospitals in Paris have been on emergency alert to treat serious injuries, including from electrocution. As hundreds of emergency staff worked on the wreckage, the cause of the derailment has not yet become fully clear.

The train had left Paris-Austerlitz station at 4.53pm and was scheduled to pass through Brétigny station at high speed without stopping on its way to Limoges at 8.05pm. But carriages three and four derailed and careered into the train platform, dragging others behind them.

( END TIME) NASA Finds Message From God On Mars Written On Tablets In A Martian Cave

NASA announced today that its Curiosity Rover has found an unambiguous message from God written on tablets in a Martian cave.

According to an official press release two giant stone slabs the size of small elephants were located deep inside a cavern abutting Aeolis Mons, a large mountain. Upon one tablet is a copy of the Ten Commandments and the text of John 3:16 written in 12 languages – including English, Spanish, Chinese, Basque and Hebrew. On the other tablet is a simple message in English reading “I am real.”

According to top scientists who have studied the discovery extensively, these findings may have definitively established Christianity as the one true religion.

“This is amazing,” says Syms Covington, an Australian researcher working for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program. “We went into the cave looking for water, and we found proof of God’s existence instead.

“I mean how else did those tablets get there? I can tell you one thing: there’s not a single atheist inside NASA’s control room now. What we saw was jaw-dropping.”

NASA’s Curiosity rover arrived on Mars in August of last year with a mission to explore the Martian climate and geology for signs for habitability.

Thus far the mission has been a success, with the discovery of an ancient seabed and chemicals needed for life suggesting that Mars was once suitable for life. However the tablets, both of which are signed “Peace and Love – Yahweh,” represent the rover’s most significant find to date, and is perhaps the most important scientific event in history.

“When people find out about this, they will demand change in our society,” explains a political scientist at Georgetown University. “Democracy will have to give way to theocracy. We’re gonna have to build more churches and reintroduce prayer into schools. Abortion is defiantly going to be illegal within a few months.”

Despite its potential significance, Covington fears that the Earth-shattering discovery may not make the impact it should.

“Unfortunately, the mainstream media is so anti-Christian, they might not even pick up this story,” he explains. “But God is real. We have proof. And everyone deserves to hear the truth.”

Next Mars rover will hunt for life

Washington - The next robotic rover to explore Mars in 2020 should scour the surface of the red planet more closely than ever for signs of past life, a Nasa science team said on Tuesday.

The US space agency's science definition team (SDT) released a 154-page document containing its proposals for the next Mars rover, after five months of work.

The mission would use microscopic analysis for the first time, collect the first rock samples for possible return to Earth and test ways to use natural resources on site for a future human trip, it said.

The Mars 2020 mission would build on the work being done by Nasa's Curiosity rover, which has been exploring the red planet since August 2012 and has already found evidence of potentially habitable environments.

The mission would present "a major step toward seeking signs of life," said Jim Green, director of the Planetary Science Division at Nasa headquarters.

Technology
The next step is for Nasa to analyse the recommendations and issue a call for scientific instruments, which could include higher resolution imaging devices, microscopes, fine scale minerology, chemistry and organic carbon detection tools to scan for biosignatures on the surface of Mars.

"To combine this suite of instruments would be incredibly powerful," said Jack Mustard, SDT chair and professor of geological sciences at Brown University.

The rover would collect about 31 samples that might someday be returned to Earth, representing "a legacy for understanding the development of habitability on the planet", he told reporters.

The US space agency has not yet devised the technology to bring the cache back to Earth without disturbing its contents, and no plans have been set for any potential sample-return.

The next Nasa mission to Mars is a November launch of Maven, an orbiter that will study how Mars interacted with the solar wind and lost its atmosphere.

The European Space Agency will follow in 2018 with its ExoMars rover.

John Grunsfeld, NASA's associate administrator for science, said the 2020 Mars rover would get the US space agency to the next step in the "quest to answer the grand questions," before a planned human mission in the 2030s.

"Do we see any evidence of past life in those habitable environments?" he said, alluding to the aims of the future missions.

Biden was speaking on Wednesday at the opening of the annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue between the two world powers.
Biden was introduced by Secretary of State John Kerry, who has returned to Washington for the two-day dialogue from his wife's bedside in Boston, after she was hospitalised.
Cabinet-level officials will review security and economic issues, which reflect growing ties but also deep-seated differences between the two countries.
Biden said an open internet is in both nations' interests and "outright cyber-enabling theft that US companies are experiencing now must be viewed as out of bounds and needs to stop”.

Arik Unveils New Generation Plane print Print

Published on July 11, 2013 by Iyanu oluwaArik Air, Nigeria’s largest airline, unveiled its latest plane on Wednesday, saying the new Airbus 330-200 twin-engine aircraft with a capacity of 217 seats has increased its fleet to 24.
The latest addition marks the first of four A330 aircraft to be delivered over the coming year, the airline said in a statement released at the event.
The new A330 aircraft will complement Arik Air’s long-haul wide body fleet, which currently consists of two A340-500 aircraft.

Airk said the A330 series offers a two class configuration with 30 Premier Business Class seats and 187 Economy Class seats, compared to 36 Premier Business Class seats and 201 Economy Class seats in the A340 aircraft.
“The Premier Business Class product is carefully tailored to meet the discerning business travellers’ needs. Passengers will have individual secluded booth areas that contain flat beds featuring an in-built massage system complete with a hand held 3.5 inch LCD screen unit controlling seat and lighting functions,” the airline said.
Arik said the latest acquisition enables the airline to upgrade the Lagos- Johannesburg route, replacing the existing B737-800 aircraft currently flying between the two cities.
It also enables Arik Air to develop long haul destinations such as China, UAE, Brazil and more cities in the United States and Europe.
All passengers on the new A330-200 will have access to audio video on demand system, with a wide selection of Hollywood and Nollywood films, the airline said.
Sources said the latest plane is the first airbus aircraft owned by Arik, the rest are on lease.

New over-the-air features available for LG Optimus G Pro

LG announced today that an over-the-air update for the LG Optimus G Pro is now available for users to download.
One new feature is Smart Video, which is similar to (if not exactly the same as) Samsung's Smart Pause. It means video can be set to pause when users turn their heads and look away. There are also two new camera functions, one of which is Dual Camera (an offshoot of the G Pro's Dual Recording mode), which takes photos from both cameras at the same time.
The other feature has already been available in the international unlocked version, and it makes it possible to pause and restart video while recording.
Moreover, improvements to the device's Quick Remote functionality with LG Smart TVs have been added, and the smartphone can now be used to input text on TVs.
Lastly, color emoticons have been added for messaging, and the G Pro's LED light around its home button can be customized. Notifications from favorite contacts can also be denoted with a specific color.
The 5.5-inch device is available exclusively on AT&T. Though its large screen may not be for everybody, we were impressed by its vivid display and swift Snapdragon 600 processor.
