The St. Petersburg, Florida Police Department is searching for the suspects involved in a car theft that was, for a moment, also a kidnapping. According to the police department’s news release, for a short time period the victims were unloading tables and chairs from their SUV into the Gethsemane Missionary Baptist church. Their SUV had the keys in the ignition and their 10-month-old baby girl strapped in a car seat. While the theft victims were inside the church, two teens jumped in the vehicle and drove away.
The one silver lining to the crime, three minutes later one of the thieves dropped the child off unharmed on the doorstep of a nearby home. The homeowner returned to find the baby just after the suspects left and then called officers. Surveillance video captured the car thief leaving the child then apparently knocking on the door before running away.
At 7:30 p.m. that night, police found the SUV in a parking lot.
Police are still searching for the suspects described as black male teens with close cut hair. Detectives are asking for the public’s help in finding the two and are directing calls to the non-emergency number 727-893-7780, Text-A-Tip to 727-420-8911 or confidential tips can be left at 727-892-5000.
